 Star Trek movie
No nerd talk yet?
Richie, you're a Trek fan, right? What do you think about the upcoming Trek movie from JJ Abrams? As a really big Trek fan myself, I have mixed feelings. Part excitement, but also trepidation. I'll go see it-- no question. But I worry perhaps he will make the franchise "too commercial" if you know what I mean. Trek is special to me because of what it is. I'm not necessarily sure that change is good, in this case. I'll reserve final judgement until after I've seen the finished product, however. (I'm a big fan of TOS, TNG, and DS9 and have seen every episode, but I skipped most of Voyager and Enterprise).

Hey Nat! Thank you for making the first nerd post! YES!!!
Ok, yes I'm going to see it. Probably to a midnight showing on opening night. I'll get tickets way in advance, wait online, and maybe even wear my starfleet communicator pin on my shirt.
I'm with you. I'm sort of dreading the fact that this movie has major suck potential. This world's gone prequel crazy I tell ya! I think it worked well for Star Wars, since they started that story from the middle, and even the Lord of the Rings, since the hobbit is the first book. But Star Trek? I just think it's weird that a franchise that has always looked to the future, and has always stressed "moving forward," is focusing so much on the past. I don't know anyone who is too crazy about enterprise (although it had it's moments,) so I wonder why they're doing another prequel with this movie.
With that being said, I think JJ Abrams is very talented, and I am excited about the cast for this movie. But, if it were up to me, I'd want to know what happens next. What happened to Captain Sisko? Is Wesley Crusher all Neo-like now that he's studied with "the traveller?" What if there's a mega universal battle, and the Q continuum was drawn into it and wrecked the galaxy. I don't know. I love the TNG and DS9, and I think there's tons of great stuff left to explore from those wonderfully written multi-episode plot lines, that would make a fantastic movie. Look at Wrath of Kahn, that's the continuation of an episode, and it turned out to be one of the best sci fi movies of all time.
There's my opinion (which is worth about as much as the gold they use to press bars of latinum)
Thanks for your post,
-Richie
I'm putting wrath of kahn on now.

With you. As big a commercial flop as Nemesis was, I would have loved to see a sequel or at least something later in that universe. Even a movie following Riker on the Titan would have been neat.

I always wished they would have brought Q to the big screen. Had they done that, they would have had the ingredients for the greatest TNG movie ever. "Q Who" (the episode where Q introduces the crew to the Borg) was probably my favorite TNG episode of all time. Great stuff.
What's your favorite of the first 10 movies? Wrath of Khan is great, but I gotta go old school and say The Motion Picture. Must be the Director's Edition though. Definitely not as accessible to a "mainstream" audience as Wrath but it embodied the things I liked most about Trek-- the exploration, the threat of a completely unknown and incomprehensible adversary, etc. I was really young when my parents first got that movie on video (BetaMax all the way!), I had already watched all the original TV episodes, but I remember being genuinely a little scared the first time I watched the V'Ger fly-over with that haunting music. I'll never forget it.

Well, we agree on one thing-- Generations belongs near the bottom of the pile and Empire belongs near the top of the list for SW.
You seen any of the TOS remasters? What do you think, yay/nay? I got the first season DVD set a while back and I think the film clean-up alone makes them worth it. Most of the "re-done" model shots & effects are just icing, and they stayed true to the original episodes for the most part and didn't get too flashy. You should check 'em out if you haven't already. I hear the 2nd season is out now, I'm going to have to look into that.

My dad and my uncle are TOS fans. Actually so are Eric, and Woody (our tour manager.)
I kinda missed the boat with TOS. I could never get into it. I always preferred TNG. Patrick Stewart can read the ingredients off a cereal box and make it sound cool.

general thoughts re trek and sci fi
Patrick Stewart and TNG win it for me, as a Brit I would say that. Just took delivery of the first series of TOS in both DVD and HD DVD format, at 17 quid it was worth it even tho hd dvd on the way out.Seeing as you have discussed series of Star Trek, what about Dr. Who either the original series or the new up to date one ,what does it for you, if indeed it does re the man from Gallifrey

I haven't seen Dr. Who, although quite a few people tell me it's very good.
And yeah, Patrick Stewart is the best!

TNG is great too, and call me crazy, but I prefer the earlier TNG seasons, 1-3 specifically to the later stuff. Maybe because it's more like TOS.
Any of you guys like Red Dwarf? Not exactly "real" Sci-Fi, but Sci-Fi Comedy....

I'm keeping myself in the dark about this until it's released.
I really hope they shed some light on the Federation and the history of it. I'm really curious as to how they established such a society/empire.
1. Generations
2. Insurrection
3. First Contact
4. The Undiscovered Country
5. Nemesis
6. The Wrath of Khan
7. The Voyage Home
8. The Final Frontier
9. The Search for Spock
10. The Motion Picture
Yes, I'm a Picard fan. Though it's been awhile since I've watched through the Star Trek movies, I'm sure that list would change if I rewatched.

Hey Richie, long time no chat--
What'd you end up thinking of the Star Trek movie? I ended up loving it, all my fears were laid to rest. Great film, can't wait until it comes out on Blu Ray so I can watch it again.

I thought it was really good. I miss the campyness of the other films but this one definitely kicked ass. I sort of wish the guy playing Sulu would have done the George Takei voice. Karl Urban's McCoy voice was spot on. I think he stole the movie!
JJ Abrams succeeded in making Anti-Trekkies like Star Trek. A lot of my friends were saying "it's better than Star Wars Episode III." I think it's great, but let's not get carried away here.

Totally agree on all points.
I felt Chekov was the weakest recast, with Sulu being a close 2nd. I'm a huge George Takei fan, so in my eyes they were big shoes to fill.
Karl Urban totally stole it, right from his very first scene. I also really, really liked the Scotty recast. The actor put his own personal twist on the character, and it worked.
